Utility Trailer Standardizes Lightweight Brake Drums Across All Models, Enhancing Payload Capacity and Reducing Costs for Fleets
IRWINDALE, Calif. (October 27, 2024) – Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company announced today the standardization of the Trident® composite steel shell brake drum from Accuride Corporation across its entire model line, effective with the 2026 model year. This strategic decision, building on the successful adoption of Trident drums on Utility flatbeds since 2020, will deliver significant weight savings and operational advantages to fleet customers.
The lightweight Trident drums reduce weight by 24 pounds per wheel end, resulting in a total reduction of 96 pounds on a typical dual-axle trailer. This immediate weight saving allows fleets to maximize payload capacity and reduce operating costs, enhancing overall efficiency.
“Our continuous testing programs, both in the field and in the lab, have proven the Trident to be the highest quality drum on the market,” said Mark Glasgow, Chief of Sales for Utility Trailer. “Its overwhelming success on our flatbeds made this a logical next step. While air disc brakes remain the gold standard for performance, the Trident drum provides fleets with a proven, high-quality, and cost-effective braking solution across all our trailer types.”
This standardization means that every new Utility reefer, dry van, and flatbed starting in the 2026 model year will feature the Trident brake drum as standard equipment. Customers have reported superior performance and reliability since its initial introduction.
“We are very excited to support all of Utility’s premium braking requirements,” said Scott Neill, Vice President of Sales – Trailer & Aftermarket for Accuride. “Utility has been an industry leader for 110 years. By standardizing the Trident drum across all models, they continue to demonstrate a powerful commitment to advanced braking systems and safety for their customers.”
